The Katadyn Vario water filter is a great camping water filter that lasts an especially long time due to its ability to adapt water filtration methods to the type of water you are using.  To do this, it incorporates three filtering mechanisms.

1. A pleated microfilter
2. A ceramic water filter (this product)
3. A carbon water filter
